Medicare Levy Estimator Australia

Use this simple estimator to calculate your annual Medicare Levy based on your taxable income, family status, and whether you're entitled to a full or partial reduction.

What Is the Medicare Levy?

The Medicare Levy is a tax paid by most Australian taxpayers to fund the public healthcare system, known as Medicare. It is typically calculated as 2% of your taxable income, but it can vary based on your personal circumstances.

When Is the Medicare Levy Applied?

The Medicare Levy is applied when your income exceeds certain thresholds set by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). These thresholds vary depending on whether you're single or part of a family, and how many dependents you have.

Current Medicare Levy Thresholds

  • Singles: $24,176 per year (no levy if income is below this)
  • Families: $40,539 per year, plus $3,760 for each dependent
  • Partial levy: If income is above the threshold but under double the threshold
  • Full levy: 2% of income if it exceeds double the threshold

How This Calculator Works

Just enter your income, marital status, and number of dependents. The estimator will apply the ATO rules and calculate whether you’re eligible for a reduction or the full 2% levy.

Exemptions and Reductions

  • Low-Income Exemption: If your taxable income is below the set threshold, you may be exempt.
  • Partial Reduction: A reduced levy may apply if your income is moderately above the threshold.
  • Full Levy: Once income doubles the threshold, the full 2% applies.

Important Notes

This tool does not calculate the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS), which applies separately to higher income earners without private health insurance. It also does not cover special cases like medical exemptions or foreign residents.
